[Special Seminar] Materials in Extreme Conditions

November 11, 2022 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Event Navigation

Dr. Janne Pakarinen
Research Team Leader
VTT National Research Centre

Abstract

Understanding the materials behaviour and performance under extreme conditions is the key for various industrial applications. The underlying fundamental mechanism are important and can give the leading edge for, for example, process development or lifetime optimization of critical components, and they also play critical role in ensuring safety. Evidently, as the industrial process aim to produce less carbon dioxide, there is a need to evaluate the behaviour of traditional and new-grade materials in various conditions.

Materials in Extreme Conditions – research team focuses on experimental materials science and its main objective is to ensure that the national businesses in Finland benefit from the most recent advances in the field. The work is highly crosscutting involving academic and non-academic partners.  The main research topics for the group include creep, creep-fatigue, corrosion and electrochemistry, microbes on metal, failure root-cause analyses, and microstructural characterization. The special seminar will introduce VTT National Research Centre of Finland Ltd. and gives more specific examples of work being carried out in the Materials in Extreme Conditions -group.

Biography

Dr. Janne Pakarinen works as a Research Team Leader at VTT National Research Centre of Finland Ltd. He leads the research group “Materials in Extreme Environments” which focuses on materials performance in harsh conditions. The group works on various industrial fields and performs mainly experimental materials science investigations. The topics include creep, creep-fatigue, and microbe-induced corrosion of copper to support the national final disposal context, electrochemistry and corrosion experiments for various process industries, failure root-cause analyses, and welding. Before re-joining VTT, Dr. Pakarinen worked as a vising scientist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, project manager at SCK CEN (Belgium) and at Studsvik (Sweden) where he was mainly involved in spent fuel backend research.
