Abstract

Over the last decade, 10 CFR 7.5.54 has made cyber risk an emerging factor to be considered in engineering design and risk analysis within the nuclear environment. Traditional engineering analysis considers risk applied to functionality, safety and security of operations, however, cyber risk is typically considered outside of and often after the primary engineering design process. Cyber informed engineering (CIE) is a body of knowledge and methodologies to characterize and mitigate risks presented by the introduction of digital technology in this formerly analog environment, focused on the application of traditional engineering techniques informed by an awareness of cyber-security threat and mitigation methods. This talk will describe how engineers can participate in mitigating cyber-security risk in engineering projects throughout the design and installation life cycle.

Bio of Mr. Jacob Benjamin

Jacob Benjamin is a nuclear cyber researcher at Idaho National Laboratory.  Mr. Benjamin has expertise performing cyber security assessments for nuclear power plants and applying digital forensics to critical infrastructure. His talk will be on Cyber-Informed Engineering.
