Student researchers at 2023 American Physical Society – Division of Plasma Physics Conference

NC State nuclear engineering students presented at the 65th Annual Meeting of the American Physical Society – Division of Plasma Physics (APS-DPP) held in Denver, CO.

  • Alexandra Akins (PhD student) presented on “Detection of Incipient Anomalies in Nuclear Systems Through Fusion of Multisensory Data with LSTM Autoencoder”. NC State adviser: Dr. Xu Wu and ANL adviser: Dr. Alexander Heifetz
  • Aidana Bauyrzhan (PhD student) presented on “Investigation of Impact of TSL Data Libraries on the MSRE Benchmark”. Faculty Adviser: Dr. Ayman I. Hawari
  • Alina Jugan (senior) presented on the “Use of optical gas analysis (OGA) to determine helium detection limits for the ITER DRGA prototype”. Work stemmed from an ORNL internship. Faculty adviser: Dr. Alexander Bataller.

Established in 1959, the objective of DPP is the advancement and dissemination of the knowledge, understanding, and applications of plasmas—assemblages of charged particles of natural and laboratory origin. Plasma research encompasses the study of the fundamental interactions of particles and light in plasmas, the study of astrophysical plasmas from planetary cores to stars, new theoretical and computational techniques to describe plasmas, and the practical application of plasmas for energy, manufacturing, medicine, agriculture, and national security. Research in pursuit of controlled nuclear fusion holds the promise of providing limitless, clean, sustainable energy to the world.
