American Nuclear Society (ANS) Student Conference postponed

Each year there is a bid to host the American Nuclear Society (ANS) Student Conference. From March 26-28, 2020, NC State University’s Nuclear Engineering ANS Student Chapter will be the host. A total of 400-500 students and professionals from across the US are expected.

The theme is Enlighten, Embrace & Empower

Enlighten ourselves of our past, present and future innovations.

Embrace our role in learning and communicating.

Empower others both inside and outside the nuclear community about our nuclear world.

 

 

Speakers confirmed include Dr. Rita Baranwal, Assistant Secretary of Energy for Nuclear Energy, the head of the Office of Nuclear Energy within the United States Department of Energy and Mr. William E. Russell, Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer BWX Technologies, Inc. Details of Duke Energy’s speaker is forthcoming, a major sponsor of this conference.

On that Thursday, there will be a series of workshops covering such topics as Molecular Modeling, Uncertainty Quantification/Sensitivity Analysis, Advancement of Experimental and Modeling Capabilities in Support of Molten Salt Reactor Development and Deployment, Probabilistic Risk Assessment, Open MC, Student-Mentor Relationships, Persuasive Speaking and What to Expect as a First Time Conference Attendee.

Tours will highlight NC State’s Nuclear Engineering 1-MW PULSTAR research reactor, simulation, nuclear materials and plasma laboratories. Tours of GE-Hitachi’s Fuel Fabrication Facility, the Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory (TUNL) at Duke University and UNC-Chapel Hill Biomedical Research Imaging Center will be done. Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) will be showcasing their Science Fair trailer. And there will be a career fair showcasing several nuclear organizations.

From Friday to Saturday there will be panels on such topics as nuclear outreach, graduate school 101, nuclear policy, professional licensure, national laboratory careers, public perception of nuclear, nuclear waste management, nuclear economics, early career faculty, advanced reactor technologies, nuclear industries. There will be technical sessions (podium and poster) showcasing undergraduate research, senior design projects and graduate research. Not to mention lunch and learn sessions and socials.

The American Nuclear Society (ANS) is a not-for-profit, international, scientific and educational organization. It was established by a group of individuals who recognized the need to unify the professional activities within the various fields of nuclear science and technology.
