Sam Hanson

PhD Student

Sam is a graduate student and research assistant under the advisory of Dr. Robert Hayes. He began enrollment at NC State’s Department of Nuclear Engineering in January 2020. Sam’s current research involves simulating/testing equipment functionality in high radiation environments, developing polymer based bulk materials for novel radiation shielding techniques, investigating plastic scintillator performances and applications, and analyzing possible radiation conditions that impact satellites in varying orbits. He is working towards a Ph.D. in nuclear engineering, while also pursuing a certificate in health physics and a nuclear engineering masters degree.

Sam’s undergraduate research was at Brookhaven National Lab and Ohio University’s Dept. of Physics and Astronomy under advisory of Dr. Justin Frantz. There, he analyzed data from heavy ion collisions within RHIC and modified simulator conditions to decrease collision simulation processing times.
