Nikolas Fickenscher is a third year PhD student in the RDNA Lab studying retrospective nuclear forensics. This entails characterizing and improving methods of dose determination for various materials. Using arrays of retrospective dosimeters for forensics purposes to determine additional forensic information available such as the size, shape, and location of sources no longer present. This research is supported through SRNL and mentored by Dr. Robert Hayes. He obtained his bachelors in nuclear engineering at NC State University in 2021 before starting on his PhD. During his undergrad, Nik was a teaching assistant for computer science while participating in undergraduate research under Dr. Mattingly studying the effect of electron escape for small volume organic scintillators.
