María Herrera

Born and raised in Costa Rica, María is a Ph.D. candidate at NC State’s Department of Nuclear Engineering. After working for two years as an R&D engineer in the biomedical industry, María was awarded a Fulbright scholarship to pursue an advanced degree in the field of nuclear engineering. Her current research focuses on possible medical applications of non-thermal plasmas. Ultimately, she hopes to return to her home country and use her education and experience to advance the utilization of plasmas in multiple fields, from cancer, wound healing, and viral infection treatments in medicine to safe and clean energy production.
