Position 1:

Area: In situ mechanical testing of metals in the TEM

Starting date: open position

Brief description of duties:

The main focus of this position will be the microstructure characterization of advanced alloys under mechanical stress, and temperature.

Candidates should hold a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering or Nuclear Engineering and have background in metals characterization (particularly electron microscopy). Experience with FIB for TEM sample preparation will be valued. More particularly any experience with Hysitron PI95 TEM holder (for in-situ mechanical testing) will be a great advantage.

The initial appointment will be made for 2 years, (1 year renewable each year upon satisfactory progress).

Selection Criteria

Applicants should have:

  1. A background or experience with materials characterization (especially T.E.M.)
  2. A good ability/motivation for experimental work related to metals.
  3. Ability to identify research objectives and complete research tasks within an agreed time-scale.
  4. Good communication skills in English. Ability to write in English at a suitable standard for the preparation of publications.
  5. Self-motivation and ability to meet agreed deadlines.
  6. Ability to work effectively in a team with students and interact effectively with collaborators.
  7. Willingness and ability to travel in order to work with collaborators.
