Two members of the faculty in NC State’s Department of Nuclear Engineering were honored this month by the American Nuclear Society (ANS) at the organization’s annual meeting.

John Gilligan, Distinguished University Professor of Nuclear Engineering and the College of Engineering’s executive associate dean, was named an ANS Fellow. Lisa Marshall, director of the Outreach, Retention and Engagement Program and lecturer and advisor in the Department of Nuclear Engineering, was honored by ANS with a presidential citation.

Gilligan, an ANS member since 1978, is also director of the US Department of Energy’s Nuclear Energy University Program Integration Office. He was honored by ANS “in recognition of his capable leadership of the Department of Energy Office of Nuclear Energy’s university programs, expanding their scope and size, and enhancing the engagement of the nuclear engineering academic community with national laboratories and industry for the betterment of the U.S. innovative nuclear energy posture.” Gilligan was one of two people elected to Fellow status by ANS at the annual meeting.

Marshall, an ANS member since 2005, also serves as the department’s associate director of undergraduate programs and as the associate director of the NC State Study Abroad Program in Engineering & Social Sciences. She was recognized “for her sustained support of ANS over many years and in many areas, most notably education, scholarship, and diversity.”

ANS held its 2022 annual meeting in Anaheim, Calif., and will run through June 10-16. ANS is the premier organization for those that embrace the nuclear sciences and technologies for their vital contributions to improving people’s lives and preserving the planet.
