The Piedmont Carolinas ANS and ASME chapters are jointly hosting a Zoom meeting on “Advanced Reactor Research @ NC State Nuclear Engineering”. There will be a virtual tour of the facilities, including the PULSTAR research reactor, and a discussion with current faculty, staff, and student(s) on the research, next student generation & outreach.

BACKGROUND
NC State Nuclear is the largest stand-alone nuclear engineering department with a research reactor in the US Southeast and is ranked 3rd by the 2021 US News & World Report. The 1st university with a nuclear engineering curriculum, NC State Nuclear celebrated their 70th anniversary this academic year.

SPEAKERS

Dr. Kostadin Ivanov is currently Professor and Department Head of Nuclear Engineering at the North Carolina State University. He was a Distinguished Professor of Nuclear Engineering and Graduate Coordinator of Nuclear Engineering Program at the Pennsylvania State University before joining NC State. Dr. Ivanov is a Fellow of American Nuclear Society. Dr. Ivanov’s work has been published in over three hundred (300) papers in peer-reviewed journals and proceedings. He has graduated one hundred (100) MEng, sixty (60) MS and forty (40) PhD students. Dr. Ivanov is a member of Nuclear Science Committee (NSC) of the Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA), OECD and Chair of Working Party on scientific Issues and uncertainty analysis of Reactor Systems (WPRS) at NEA, OECD. He is Chair and a member of Executive Committee of Nuclear Engineering Department Head Organization (NEDHO) as well as a member of INL BEA Board of Managers and Science & Technology Committee and Nuclear Energy Institute Advisory Board.

Dr. Ishita Trivedi works as a computational scientist at Idaho National Laboratory. She received her PhD in Nuclear Engineering from North Carolina State University with a focus on advanced reactor modelling and simulation. Ishita also has a M.Sc. and B.Sc. in Nuclear Engineering from North Carolina State University and Pennsylvania State University, respectively. While at NC State, she received the Graduate Merit Award, the Doctoral Fellowship, and the 2020 Doctoral Scholar of the Year award. She was the Chair for the recent 2021 NC State-hosted ANS Student Conference. Ishita is an active member of the American Nuclear Society where she is on the executive committee of Young Members Group (YMG) and Education Training Workforce Development (ETWD) divisions. She is also on the sponsorship committee of PHYSOR 2022 conference and was the immediate past chair of the ANS 2021 Student Conference. In addition to that, Ishita serves as the chair of Advisory Board of Generation Atomic. Outside of work, she enjoys exploring museums, running, and learning to cook.

Ms. Lisa Marshall is Director of the Nuclear Outreach, Retention & Engagement Program as well as a lecturer and adviser at NC State University. She teaches at the first-year level – Introduction to Engineering & Problem Solving as well as Engineering in the 21st Century. She also developed and teaches an upper-level Energy Geographies course. Lisa is a former ANS Board of Director and currently holds executive positions in the American Nuclear Society (ANS), the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE) & the American Association of Geographers (AAG). She is the recipient of 2020 ANS Young Members Advancement Award, the 2020 NC State Engineering Champion for Women Award, the 2019 NC State Outstanding Engagement Award and the 2009 ANS Landis Public Communications & Education Award. She holds a master’s degree in Geography with a specialization in Energy Geography as well as a graduate certificate in Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Lisa is completing her PhD in the Higher Education program specializing in engineering education.
