NC State part of 11-university US Department of Energy-funded Nuclear Science & Security Consortium

Congratulations to co-principal investigators (co-PIs) Dr. Djamel Kaoumi, associate professor in Nuclear Engineering and Dr. Tim Horn, assistant professor in Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering. They are leads for NC State University on the $25 million grant funded Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE NNSA). The Nuclear Science & Security Consortium is a 11-university, 5-national laboratory team and includes,

  • University of California, Berkeley (lead university)
  • Air Force Institute of Technology
  • George Washington University
  • Michigan State University
  • North Carolina State University
  • Texas A&M University
  • University of California, Davis
  • University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign
  • University of Nevada, Las Vegas
  • University of New Mexico
  • University of Tennessee, Knoxville
  • Los Alamos National Laboratory
  • Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory
  • Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory
  • Oak Ridge National Laboratory
  • Sandia National Laboratories

This consortium will carry out R&D in five research focus areas: nuclear physics and nuclear data; radiochemistry and nuclear chemistry; nuclear material science; radiation detection; nuclear chemical engineering and nuclear engineering.  Linking these research areas are two cross-cutting efforts: computing and optimization in nuclear applications; and education in nuclear science, technology, and policy.

Dr. Kaoumi’s research develops a mechanistic understanding of microstructure property relationships in nuclear materials and Dr. Horn’s research is in additive manufacturing.

Further details on this Consortium is available here.
