Abstract

Dr. Kessinger will present an overview of the Savannah River National Laboratory with emphasis on activities in the area of Nuclear Nonproliferation.

Biography

Dr. Kessinger received a Ph.D. in physical chemistry in 1989 from the University of Kansas, where he studied under the direction of Professor P. W. Gilles.  He has worked as a process development chemistry at the Idaho National Laboratory (1990-2001) and the Savannah River National Laboratory (2001-present).  Dr. Kessinger joined the SRNL Nonproliferation Technologies Section as a manager in 2011 and has been responsible for organizations working in the areas of nuclear forensics, nonproliferation technology development, and trace analysis analytical chemistry.

His technical interests include:

  • High Temperature Chemistry of Refractory Materials
  • Mass Spectrometry
  • Nuclear Fuel Cycle Chemistry

His R&D activities have addressed:

  • Glass-ceramic waste form immobilization of Idaho Chemical Processing Plant calcined high-level waste
  • Development of Naval fuel processing flowsheets
  • Investigation of the physical and chemical phenomena related to thermal ionization mass spectrometry ion formation
  • Processing, characterization, and storage of actinide materials.
