[Seminar] Introduction to the OSCAR-5 Code System

March 4, 2021 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Event Navigation

Dr. Francois A. Van Heerden,
South African Nuclear Energy Corporation (SOC) Ltd

Abstract

This talk gives an overview of the OSCAR-5 code system, which is currently used as an operational support tool for a number of operating research reactors. In particular, it will demonstrate how the system’s multi-code approach provides a powerful platform that can facilitate and automate many routine support calculations, including core or facility design, fuel management, material activation and safety analysis. The current validation status as applied to research reactors, as well as the extension to power reactor (LWR and SMR) modelling and multi-physics support, will also be demonstrated. Finally, the use of the platform to support ongoing research activities will be discussed.

Biography

Francois van Heerden is a scientist in the Radiation and Reactor Theory (RRT) section at Necsa. He holds a Ph.D in mathematics from Utah State University (2004), and joined RRT in 2007. His particular areas of work include transport code development, as well as the continued development of the pre- and post processing platform which facilitates multi-code and multi physics support within the OSCAR-5 code suite.
