[Seminar] Advanced Manufacturing Technologies for SMRs and ARs

September 23, 2021 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Event Navigation

David W. Gandy
Senior Technical Executive
Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI)

Abstract

The next generation of commercial nuclear reactors is upon us. In this decade, several new advanced reactor technologies will be deployed in the US and around the world. In support of this deployment, EPRI is working to re-invent the nuclear supply chain for major nuclear components. EPRI is leading several projects on advanced manufacturing that enable much faster fabrication of nuclear components while maintaining and exceeding the quality produced with earlier technology. This work enables the industry to produce components more cost effectively but it also creates a more resilient and broad supply chain.

Biography

David Gandy is a Senior Technical Executive in EPRI’s Nuclear Materials area where he is responsible for technical oversight of major projects on powder metallurgy, advanced welding, additive manufacturing, GEN IV alloys, and next-generation erosion/wear resistant alloys.   Mr. Gandy has 37+ years of demonstrated leadership and excellence in materials, advanced manufacturing, and welding technologies supporting the power industry in the development and implementation of advanced life prediction methodologies of boiler, steam & gas turbines, reactor pressure vessels, and heat recovery steam generators.

Prior to his current role, Mr. Gandy managed EPRI’s Technology Innovation Program where he was responsible for promoting innovative, exploratory and strategic technologies across the Institute to accelerate the adoption of these technologies within the electricity industry.  His duties included operational oversight of 14 long-range, strategic programs.

Mr. Gandy is recognized as an ASM International Fellow.  He received his B.S. degree in Materials Science & Engineering from North Carolina State University.   He currently holds 13 U.S. Patents and has authored over 260 journal articles and technical reports.  He is a member of ASME BPV-II—Materials Standards and BPV-III Nuclear Components.
