| biography: |
Dr. Raymond L.
Murray was brought to North Carolina State College (later University)
in 1950 by Dr. Clifford Beck, then head of the Physics Department,
as professor of physics. In his history of the "early years", Dr.
Zumwalt quotes Dr. Beck as saying that this event "...was the beginning
of 30 years of outstanding leadership in nuclear engineering education
and research." And indeed it was! Dr. Murray was involved in planning
and establishing the reactor and served as head of the Department
of Nuclear Engineering from 1963-74. Becoming an Emeritus Professor
in 1980 has not slowed him down. In his own words, he says, "I am
as busy as ever and enjoying every minute of it." Dr. Murray has
served as chairman of the North Carolina Low-Level Radioactive Waste
Management Authority, which unsuccessfully sought to develop a disposal
facility for the Southeast. He has prepared fifth editions of his
textbooks Nuclear Energy (2001) and Understanding Radioactive Waste
(2003). |
