Biography

Lisa Marshall is the inaugural assistant extension professor & director of outreach, retention & engagement in NC State Nuclear Engineering and is responsible for pre-college through graduate level initiatives. She teaches courses at the first-year engineering level – Introduction to Engineering & Problem Solving as well as Engineering in the 21st Century. She developed and teaches an upper-level Energy Geographies course. She is a scholarship/fellowship reviewer at the national through department level as well as the departmental alumni relations and global student experiences lead.

Professor Marshall leads the NEO Research Group, a multi-university set of scholars focused on engagement initiatives to introduce, attract, and retain students in the STEM field with a focus on nuclear science & technology. Broadly, her research work is in the areas of energy geography, (nuclear) engineering education, (inter)national co-curricular scholarship, geographic information systems (GIS), as well as STEM education for women and under-served populations.

She is the recipient of the 2022 ANS Social Responsibility in the Nuclear Community, 2022 ANS Presidential Citation (Education, Scholarship & Diversity), 2020 ANS Young Members Advancement Award, 2020 NC State Engineering Champion for Women Award, 2019 NC State Outstanding Engagement Award, 2009 ANS Landis Public Communications & Education Award and was inducted into Sigma Xi, a scientific research society. She currently holds executive positions in the American Nuclear Society (ANS). She has held positions in the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE) & the American Association of Geographers (AAG) and remains an active member of both organizations.

Lisa is completing her PhD in Higher Education – Opportunity, Equity & Justice, focus in engineering, holds a master’s degree in geography with a specialization in energy geography, a graduate certificate in geographic information systems (GIS) and has completed requirements for the graduate certificate in engineering education (spring 2022).

At the end of the June 2023 American Nuclear Society (ANS) Annual Conference, Marshall assumed the position of vice- president/ president. She is the first Black female VP/President-elect for the Society. Dr. J. Ernest Wilkins Jr. was the 20th president of the Society in 1974-75.
